GENERAL SUMMARY: Olive View-UCLA Medical Center (OVMC) is seeking an experienced and forward-thinking physician leader to serve as Chief of the Department of Anesthesiology. In partnership with the Chiefs of Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and the Clinical Nursing Director, this leader will share responsibility for operational oversight, strategic planning, clinical quality, and financial performance across preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative services.
We are looking for an innovative, energetic physician with strong change management skills and a data driven mindset. The Chief of Anesthesia provides 24/7 leadership focused on patient safety, customer service, high quality care delivery, fiscal stewardship, human resources, communications, patient access, advocacy, continuous improvement, and professional development. The Chief will guide a highly skilled group of faculty and trainees dedicated to delivering state of the art anesthetic care to a diverse patient population, while advancing health equity for underserved communities.
The department includes 24 full- and part-time physicians, one CRNA, two nurse practitioners, ancillary staff, and UCLA residents. OVMC hosts a dynamic graduate medical education program with a long tradition of training clinical, academic, and national leaders. The campus features 10 operating rooms, a GI suite, Cath Labs, Interventional Radiology, and OB Suites, supporting a full spectrum of inpatient and outpatient anesthesia services—including Breast Surgery, Colon and Rectal, Plastics and Reconstruction, Urology, Orthopedics, Hand, Head and Neck, Thoracic, Gynecologic Oncology, and multiple other oncology subspecialties.
CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates should have a strong academic background, demonstrated leadership ability, and experience with data driven management and innovation. Additional requirements include:
- Eligibility for California medical licensure
- Commitment to serving vulnerable populations
- Proven success working collaboratively within complex health systems
- Ability to recruit, develop, and mentor faculty
- Capacity to support integration of clinical service, medical education, and academic productivity
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
The Chief of Anesthesia will:
- Serve as a role model academic physician and leader, exemplifying professionalism, ethical conduct, and productivity in clinical care, research, education, and management.
- Recruit, hire, and retain faculty, trainees, and staff to fulfill departmental clinical and academic missions.
- Develop opportunities aligned with departmental and hospital needs, and mentor faculty, staff, and trainees to support their success.
- Build leadership succession through recruitment, training, and professional development.
- Use data and analytics to advance initiatives that improve patient access, quality outcomes, and productivity.
- Participate in OVMC’s senior physician leadership team and collaborate on key institutional decisions.
- Establish annual departmental goals and secure the resources needed to achieve them.
- Prepare accurate job duty statements in coordination with DHS Human Resources.
- Maintain a robust professional performance evaluation process and clinical quality improvement program.
- Ensure residency program compliance with ACGME and related accrediting bodies.
- Ensure regulatory compliance and productivity standards for inpatient and outpatient services.
- Uphold all departmental, facility, and County policies.
- Develop and implement departmental protocols, procedures, and administrative mechanisms.
- Maintain oversight of significant incidents and ensure timely reporting to appropriate units, consulting with the CMO as needed.
- Implement corrective actions when faculty, trainees, or staff do not meet policy requirements, in coordination with DHS Human Resources.
